At Thalassa Wellness & Rehabilitation Center, a deeply restorative spa journey unfolds through marine-based therapies, innovative treatments and full-body relaxation. Fernanda Langhammer headed there to experience a truly transformative escape.

Not all pampering sessions are created equal and few spa experiences rival the restorative escape offered by Thalassa Wellness & Rehabilitation Center at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. With its world-class facilities and serene atmosphere, every visit promises renewed energy, complete relaxation and a lasting sense of well-being – every single time.

My visit this time was to embark on the Thalassa Escape, a comprehensive package that includes their many special spaces dedicated to thalassotherapy, as well as the Supreme Youth Pioneer Treatment, a facial for all skin types.

Thalassa therapies harness the healing properties of heated seawater, seaweed, mud and marine minerals to promote relaxation, health, muscle recovery and skin revitalisation. As the spa’s name suggests, it is a perfect destination for those especially interested in rehabilitation.

My Thalassa Journey

My therapist for the day was Mary Anne, an experienced professional – lucky me. She carefully walked me through each part of the Thalassa Escape package: the Affusion Scrub, the Multi Jet, the Marine Body Wrap and a back and shoulder massage – each lasting 30 minutes – for two hours of pure delight (with a facial to follow, finalising the most amazing session of me-time). The team at Thalassa Wellness & Rehabilitation Center hand-picked each treatment especially for me – it felt like they knew exactly what I needed.

Water and More Water

The spa experience began with the Affusion Scrub. To my surprise, we stepped into a treatment room with a bed that resembled a covered bath, complete with overhead jets — far from the typical massage table I was expecting. She asked me to lie on my stomach and began exfoliating my body using PHYTOMER’s Toning Body Scrub, formulated with marine salt crystals. Enriched with Oligomer – the brand’s signature seawater concentrate known for remineralising and strengthening the skin – the scrub gently removed my dead skin cells while delivering essential minerals.

What made the experience especially memorable was the way each freshly scrubbed area was immediately rinsed beneath warm cascading jets of seawater. The sensation was incredibly soothing. There was none of the usual stickiness or mess associated with body scrubs; everything was washed away right there, leaving my skin feeling noticeably softer, smoother and deeply cleansed.

We then moved to a room centred around a special multi-jet bathtub. At first glance, it appeared to be an ordinary tub filled with water. But the moment I stepped in, my body began to float – seawater, remember? – and then May Anne pressed a few buttons, and the magic began. Jets of varying pressure burst to life in rhythmic waves, streaming from every direction and targeting muscles I didn’t even realise needed attention. It felt like a deep, full-body massage powered entirely by water.

I could have stayed there for hours. The dim lighting, the comforting warmth and the steady pressure of the jets created an almost hypnotic sense of relaxation. When Mary Anne returned to let me know the session was over, I felt a bit sad, a feeling that vanished as the thought that there were more treatments ahead quickly lifted my spirits.

Skin, Body and Mind

The next step was, once again, on an unusual massage bed: a dry flotation bed, also known as a soft-pack bed. The cushion was warm and, after applying marine mud to my entire body, Mary Anne wrapped me in plastic and covered me with a heated blanket. She then asked if I was claustrophobic – which I am, slightly – because the bed lowers halfway down, creating the sensation of being cocooned in water. Although she explained it was only air beneath me, it genuinely felt as though I was floating. Thankfully, this kind of restricted movement doesn’t trigger my claustrophobia; if anything, it makes me feel comforted and cosy. The temperature was a little too warm for me at first, but Mary Anne quickly adjusted it so I felt comfortable. She then began massaging my scalp, and I nearly fell asleep. My mind drifted into a deep state of relaxation – calm, peaceful and completely at ease.

While my mind wandered away, the mineral-rich mud worked its magic, detoxifying and remineralising my skin, leaving it firmer, softer and beautifully revitalised. The heat also helped stimulate circulation and ease away any lingering tensio
